Activities
NELA, in collaboration with International HIV/AIDS Alliance (IHAA), National and State Action Committees on AIDS, provides technical and financial assitance to NGOs/CBOs particularly in the south-western part in Nigeria to carry out HIV/AIDS prevention, care and support programmes at the community level.
This is achieved through training in various areas of HIV/AIDS such as syndromic management of STD, care and support for PLWHA, peer education, participatory community assessment, communication strategies in HIV/AIDS, and reproductive health using training tools that have been tested over the years.

NELA's mission is to mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS on individuals, families and communities and to strenghten the capacity of community organizations to do the same. Working in five major operating groups:

PREVENTION OF HIV/AIDS
NELA implements various activities aiming at creating awareness, enhancing positive behavioural changes and reducing risk to HIV/AIDS infection. NELA uses strategies that are known to have worked in the prevention of HIV, targeting general population, vulerable groups, opinion and religious leaders.

CARE AND SUPPORT
NELA provides comprehensive care for those infected by HIV and members of their families. For those in health crisis, facilities for short stay care are provided and on discharge, the clients are provided with regular home-based health care services. Continuum of care for the clients is ensured through follow-up counselling, referral and promotion of positive living.

HIV COUNSELLING
One of the major activities of NELA, apart from providing HIV counselling services to the populace, is improving the HIV counselling manpower in the country. With the support of agencies such as DFID, USAID, IHAA, British Council, NELA has trained many HIV counselors in various parts of the country and has ensured the maintainance of a cascade of training through the Training of trainers in HIV counselling.

ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT
NELA provides micro project support to PLWHAs.

REFERRAL SERVICES
NELA networks with both private and public health institutions within the communities. In order to facilitate referral to these institutions for comprehensive care to her clients, NELA also accepts referral from them and other NGOs.

RESEARCH
NELA is involved in epidemiological and behavioural studies especially in the area of STDs. NELA's laboratory is equipped to perform standard HIV antibody test, Western Blot Test and STI Laboratory Diagnosis.


ETHICS AND HUMAN RIGHTS
NELA serves as resource body on ethics and human rights issues on HIV/AIDS to various organisations and government bodies.
